Every software organization deals with incidents. Few handle them well.
This book brings the hard-won lessons of public safety emergency management — where the Incident Command System was born — into the world of software operations. It's a practical guide to building and running an incident management capability that actually works: from individual responder skills, to incident command, to the organizational program that ties it all together.
It's written for on-call engineers, incident commanders, and the engineering leaders responsible for making incident management a real capability — not just a hope and a prayer.
About the author: Brent Chapman is first and foremost a tech professional; he's been a sysadmin, network architect, and staff- or principal-level engineer at companies like Google, Slack, Salesforce, and Atlassian. He created Google's IMAG incident management system and led incident management at Slack. But uniquely, he's also a former air search and rescue pilot, emergency dispatcher, and incident commander who has practiced ICS in the field, not just read about it. Through his consulting practice, he's worked with many leading companies to strengthen their incident management capabilities.
